Something the Chinese Made Right: Instant Jello

For some of you out there, you might know that I'm not a big fan of JELL-O brand jello. I was traumatized once by the raspberry--it was way too sour.

I'm not trying to, as they say, "hate on" the Chinese right now, but the stigma is that there's a lot of cheap labor out there. We temporarily forget that there's also a whole lot of history and culture from there. (Lots of Kung Fu movies, too.)

But for the past several days, I've been in a touch of zen with the Jen-Yi brand jelly--or, as it's called, Dofu Delight. It's one of those almost-instant types: you don't just add water, but you boil it. Oh, and you put in some milk, as well. The cream gives the result some great texture (like, say, tofu) and balances the sourness that may result. There's also some good news for you lactose intolerant types out there, too: from what I've seen, at least, nothing will happen.

The thing is, the Jen-Yi brand has a lot of cool mellow. The taste envelops your tongue but doesn't leave any rancidity, and the temperature is just right for a hot day. Combine that with the fact that jello is (already) melt-in-your-mouth, and it's a whole lot of goodness from there.

My favorite is probably either the almond or the mango jello, though they're all pretty excellent. I've been hoarding the boxes and making them almost every day, because they're great for a low-caloric after-dinner dessert and midnight snack.

The Omegle Conundrum

I recall being introduced to omegle about a year ago, when I was bored and wanted something to do. It's one of those sites that pairs you up with a random person from who-knows-where, and you just start chattin' it up.

I had the unfortunate scenario of talking to two 4channers in a row (wow; Firefox considers "4channers" an actual word). The first linked me to a mudkip (that's a Pokemon, for anyone who's asking) site that just wouldn't close, causing me to shut down my computer. The second randomly said something about butt-touching. Talk about awkward.

As a result, I have learned the lessons of online correspondence, especially with someone you don't know. I would recommend that people stay away. (Then again, you could shut me up with all these papers about the statistics of online dating or something.)

Headphones

Yesterday night, my headphones broke when I tried to remove them. I know, I know--you're probably thinking I have a big head (in more ways than one).

These headphones have been with me the past few years, ever since I received them for Christmas one day. I loved them--they're Bose, too--and they were comfortable and gave me a great sound experience.

The thing is, they snapped right where the earpiece connects to the middle part. That means it's a bitch at the least to glue on, not that it worked. Now my headset is "hanging on by a thread" (not really, but it may as well be one), as they say. More like green duct tape. It keeps unfastening, but it's better than glue that doesn't work.

I may have to look up where the nearest glue gun is.

To Speak of Bedsheets

Let's first rewind back to a few days ago. I, being a lazy person, had not replaced my bed sheets for the past several months. Needless to say, I changed my loyalties to the "itchy" variety. The new bedsheets were awesome--green (or, more appropriately, mint), very soft (1000 thread count is not exactly "stiff"), new (who doesn't like fresh stuff?), and, most importantly, cheap ($25? What a bargain!). They were Egyptian Cotton brand, I believe--the one that always (at least here in my state) crops up at the state fairs for a far lower price than department stores. The best part is, they can fit deep pockets real easily.

Check out the King Size at Amazon here. By the way, that's also where the image came from, so no formal referencing this time around.

Well, yesterday I ended up letting a family member take a nap on my aforementioned bed (why they didn't want to use their own I'll never know), and, needless to say, not washing after going to the gym does make your covers smell rather unpalatable. I was unable to go to bed, and, alas, I have set a record for my room for smallest amount of time needed to change the bed sheet.

It's too blue, too shiny, too old-fashioned, and too new (it smelled like cardboard before my first night of "breaking it in") for my taste. But at least I slept a lot better.

The Power of Laziness

I'm astounded at how many people don't like to read anymore. I've heard countless statements, including "I was always taught to make webpages simple, because people are too lazy to scroll down," or "If there aren't any pretty pictures, I won't bother reading this article." Where's all the fun in that?

Take video games, for instance. The good ol' text adventure games require you to memorize and to envision a world that has a limited number of consequences. They're pretty nifty. On the other hand, it's all text, and so warrants a little more attention than, say, swinging a sword with the WiiMote.

It's not fair to the author, who's obviously (or not so obviously) spent a lot of time writing about this-and-that for the reader. A few pictures of okay quality are easy. The written part is much harder, both to create and, apparently, to digest.

Persimmons

For those of you who knew me in high school, you'd probably know that I had an odd fascination with mangoes. Those yellow, succulent fruits (that's right - none of the red-green ones) with their easy to peel skin and sticky innards were perhaps the epitome of my existence. "Mangoes are the spice of life" was even in the yearbook for senior year. So many of you ended up believing that, well, mangoes were my favorite fruit.

That's a sham.

You see, though I love mangoes and their generic savory-ness, I have a favorite fruit that I've never really told anybody: persimmons. Yes, persimmons. These things taste God awful when they're unripe, but so darn sweet when they are. And they're orange. (For the time being, orange is my favorite color.) They've always trumped mangoes in terms of my favorite fruit, and I even ended up naming two blogs after it. (Loserish, perhaps, since the fruit has had nothing to do with my posts until now--but I'm not too good with names.)

So, hello, persimmons, and hello, my mangoes. I've been having mangoes for the past few weeks, but the other fruit is few and far between. I hope, though, that I'll manage to taste one before the end of summer.

My Favorite Milk Chocolate

I just love milk chocolate. It's not too sweet like white chocolate (although, frankly, that's my second most favorite), but not that bitter, like dark chocolate. Sure, it might not exactly be "the real thing," but I'm fine with that.

My favorite milk chocolate has to be Chokladljus, from IKEA. This little baby is just rich enough to warrant enough of that umami feeling in your mouth, but not too much to leave lingering, weird texture in your mouth like Hershey sometimes does. The "bite" is just right, too--and let's not forget the taste. Chokladljus warrants just enough sweetness to quickly give you that savory sensation in your mouth.

I had the opportunity to go to IKEA the other week, and I got three bars. I'm eating my first today--and though I was convinced I could restrain myself, it's apparent that I can't. Chocolate and Big Bang Theory--a bit of physics comedy and a nightly indulgence. It feels just right.
